You don’t need to be a full-time gamer to get excited about the stunning beauty that is the design of the Razer Ornata Chroma keyboard. It’s like the name says: revolutionary. Let’s say that you are a gamer; it’s only natural that you want to arm yourself with the best equipment before heading into your tournament.
When you have the right kind of keyboard, your confidence goes up, and so does your ability to finally nail the combo sequence that you’ve been trying to get right on your standard keyboard.
Razer Ornata Chroma Membrane RGB Gaming Keyboard Review
The Razer brand is known throughout the gaming and the PC worlds. Their keyboards are designed in a way that captures everyone’s attention, and while its sole purpose is to enhance the gaming experience, it also works as a great keyboard. Razer is always working on ways to introduce new technology into their keyboards, though their style and aesthetics remain the same.
Features of the Razer Ornata Chroma
This gaming keyboard includes standard components when purchased. You receive the keyboard, a leatherette wrist rest to assist with extended usage, owner’s manual and all relevant software, along with the boxing/packaging.
- Hybrid Mechanical-Membrane Keys
- Ergonomic detachable Leatherette Wrist Rest
- Individually Backlit Keys with millions of color options
- 10 Anti-Ghosting keys
While this keyboard looks like it’s on the complicated side, it’s deemed to be more simplistic for the advanced gaming keyboard user. Razer kept the size of the keyboard to a minimum, which was impressive considering its big design and the functions that it comes with. The trademarked Chroma technology provides nearly 17 million customizable colors that can be programmed to integrate different colors at different sections of the keyboard. You can even program the colors to react to specific movements and keystrokes.
The setup of the keyboard causes the “clicking” sound of the mechanical key portion to vary depending on which area of the keyboard gets used, and the membranes are fragile. Mecha-membrane gaming keyboards aren’t conventional, though the combined feature provides a smooth-touch typing experience. Another thing to keep in mind is that because of the sleek black color, stains are quite visible on the keys, which means cleaning it often is important.

How to Install Razer Ornata Chroma Software
If it were as simple as plugging it in and programming features with the tapping of a button, Razer would have figured it out. However, it’s not that simple. When you receive your owner’s manual in your package contents, you should read the guide on how to install Razer’s signature software called Synapse. The Razer Ornata Chroma software is where you go to configure and program your macros, as well as customize your 16.8 million colors, and set illumination and backlight effects that you want to happen on your keyboard. Included is a YouTube tutorial on where to go to find Synapse in case you need extra help with customizing your new keyboard.
One of the main concerns with the Razer Ornata is the way the clicking sounds differ throughout the keyboard and how fragile the membranes are. The majority of users are used to entirely mechanical keyboards or entirely membrane ones, but the Razer Ornata is a hybrid of the both, so it does take some getting used to.
If you aren’t looking to have a combination of the two types of keyboards, the Razer BlackWidow Chroma V2 is a viable alternative. It’s important to keep in mind that while it is a suitable replacement and strictly mechanical, it is more expensive than the Ornata, though it’s also highly rated. A less expensive alternative is the CORSAIR K55 RGB Gaming Keyboard.
The ideal customer for the Razer Ornata is an experienced gamer who understands how to use gaming keyboards because of previous experience. While it does come with an owner’s manual, the variety of features could be seen as advanced and therefore, more manageable for someone who has used a mechanical gaming keyboard in the past.
That being said, as long as the user has a desire to learn the functions of the keyboard, it doesn’t state anywhere that everyday computer users can’t use it. For a keyboard, it is on the expensive side, but it is highly regarded and well worth it.
Verdict of the Razer Ornata Chroma Gaming Keyboard
After getting to spend some time using the Razer Ornata Chroma and getting to play around with it, we can say that this might be one of our favorite keyboards to date. Using the Synapse software was more comfortable than expected, and the color combinations that you can create along with the macros made the gaming experience more real than imagined.
Once getting used to everything that this durable and wonderfully designed keyboard can do, the price appears really not that high for everything the keyboard does for you. The amount of backlight and illumination that you get from this RGB keyboard, mixed with the multifunction capabilities of this keyboard and a Chroma gaming mouse make it the perfect solution for any gamer looking to gear up with proper equipment.
