About 30 years ago, Sega launched the 8-bit handheld Game Gear to compete against the big competition from Ataris Atari Lynx and Nintendos Game Boy. This attempt was not particularly successful despite the technical superiority of the Game Gear because of Game Boy’s enormous popularity.
Sega announced the comeback of the handheld Game Gear in the form of a greatly reduced micro version.
Sega Game Gear Micro
There are 4 different types of Micro Game gears at a price of around £50 each. The differences from each micro are the colors and the games each contains.

Let’s hope your favorite color matches with your favorite games from the Game Gear Micro. The only way to get the games is through the color console you pick. Even though it’s a risky move, it does give the incentive to collect them all.
It’s good but its no Sega Series X.
Even though this was a great announcement for any retro gaming fan which was rumored massive in comparison. It was first rumored that the big game-changing announcement was going to be the Xbox Series X being released under the Sega brand. Then named the Sega Series X due to a lack of Xbox sales in Japan. With Sega being very well known in Japan. It could have been the increase in sales they need to win future console wars. The console always seems to be third place in the Japanese console market. With Nintendo and Sony always taking the lead in the market and the Japanese market plays a massive role in the success of most consoles. It doesn’t seem to be the case anymore though as it looks like the massive news was the Game Gear Micro.
What could this mean for future Minis / Micros?
This could be the future of mini consoles with growing popularity. There’s no surprise that we’re getting more Micro consoles in the place of Mini consoles. With the demand and market of retro consoles increasing. It looks like we’re going to definitely get more of these consoles released in the future. Now that Micros look to be part of the future of mini consoles. We could see a lot of other consoles get the Micro makeover. The biggest one that comes to mind would the GameBoy Micro. A beloved handheld console that has already been suggested to come back by fans. The new Micro formate would be a great way to bring it back as it already is quite small.
Game Gear Micro is scheduled for release in Japan in October 2020. When and if the micro handheld will also be offered in other regions of the world is not yet clear.
